How I start my morning sets the mood for my entire day. Before my wife and I had our son, it was a lot easier to jump right into work and be productive. Now with our wonderful little distraction, I have to be a lot more resolved in how I want to start my day. It’s too easy to get swept away just hanging out with him.
Breakfast
If you haven’t already noticed from my other posts, I try to make everything in my life efficient. It’s my natural resting state, so it makes sense that it would extend to what I eat as well. Every morning I start with a full fat, blueberry and banana smoothie, and a butter coffee (recipes for both below). The 32 oz smoothie holds me over for quite a while and my son Noah loves them as well, so we usually spend the first part of the morning sitting on the floor of our kitchen downing our smoothies.
Once I’m done with the smoothie, I move on to the butter coffee. Some people love them; some hate them. There doesn’t seem to be a middle ground. As you can tell, I’m on the love side. The butter helps keep me full for longer, and I’m convinced it causes the caffeine to be more slowly absorbed into my body as well. Because I’ve just downed 32 oz of near freezing liquid from the smoothie, the coffee helps warm me up and gets me set to go.
What I really like about this breakfast is it’s really easy to shop for ( Smoothie: yogurt, bananas, frozen blueberries – Butter Coffee: Butter, Coffee, MCT oil) quick to make, and isn’t too heavy. The older I get the more I realize how different foods effect me. Some make me more productive than others, so it’s important that my breakfast works with me to get the most out of my day.
What about you? I’m always interested to learn what others have for breakfast. Please share below!
Banana & Blueberry Smoothie
Ingredients
- 32 oz. Whole Milk Full Fat Plain Yogurt
- 1 Banana
- 3 Cups Frozen Blueberries
- Blender
Instructions
- Combine the 32 oz yogurt and banana in blender and blend until smooth.
- Add 3 cups of blueberries to same blender and blend until smooth.
Butter Coffee
Ingredients
- 8 oz fresh hot coffee
- 3 tbsp Grass fed Butter
- 1 tbsp MCT oil
Instructions
- Brew coffee (I prefer using a french press)
- Combine coffee, butter and oil in blender, and blend until butter is dissolved and you have a nice frothy top.
Notes
I normally use regular MCT oil, but if I am really going to need to focus, I use Brain Octane oil, which has a higher level of C8 fats.
If this is your first time having butter coffee, you may want to start with a half glass to see how your stomach handles it. If you normally don't eat a lot of fat, you may want to ease your stomach into it.
Under no circumstance should you make the coffee without blending it. If you do not blend the coffee and emulsify it, it can cause stomach cramps.
I’m always on the hunt for a better breakfast, and this one takes the cake. This looks so delicious!

The smoothie sounds great and I bet my little one would love it too! Not so sure about the butter coffee but I might have to give it a try.
Yeah, part of the reason I make so much of the smoothie is because my son started eating most of mine 🙂
As for the coffee, I know it sounds strange… especially the butter, but I’ve been drinking it for almost 3 years and it really does help me to be more productive. I used to drink energy drinks or shots back in the day, but those always made me feel awful the next day. This actually gives me a mental and energy boost, and I don’t get tired later or pay for it the day after.
Pardon the long reply. As you can tell I love the stuff!
This recipe sounds so great! I love starting my days with smoothies.

I wish I had more time for breakfast – usually it’s grabbing a granola bar and going out the door. Love these recipes though!
